I asked my teacher’s father-in-law if he’s ever ‘haunted’ by anything he experienced in the Vietnam war, and this was his response:
I don’t think anything about Vietnam really “haunts” me, but as I look back on the experience I know that my survival, when so many others did not survive, had nothing to do with my own personal qualities. I wasn’t tougher, smarter, more courageous or somehow a better soldier than anyone who didn’t survive. I was just luckier. For me, that realization is something I think about almost every day, even after so many years have passed.
